Just listening to this talk it is not clear of her contributions. She openly admits of being focused in her own work at the time, and ignoring other contemporary efforts and reinventing. Is the take away that sometimes it is okay to remain in your shell provided you persist long enough in your work to develop something equivalent. Need to read more to educate myself about her work.

Liked the historical references. I was recalling my 'Principles of Programming Languages' course in fall of 88, and don't remember the mention of CLU. Now wonder if it was a deficiency in the design of the course, or is it only recently that her work on CLU has been recognized as being seminal.

Ok I read the Wikipedia article on CLU...It did introduce several new concepts: iterators, exception handling, a notion of objects, heap based memory management, and multiple assignments.

All these constructs we now take for granted. Now I appreciate her contributions. Very cool.
Yes, a measure of success of ideas is that we now take it for granted :)
