Here is his definition of a Whig (via Masani) to compare with Stephen's: Being a Whig, in his view, did not involve slavishly following any particular political text or statesman. It meant being heir to a long struggle for civil and religious freedoms dating as far back as the parliamentary opposition to Elizabeth I. He credited the Whigs with the very existence of the House of Commons, for rightly opposing Tory wars against the American and French republics, for extending religious tolerance and for abolishing slavery.
