Is Oscar Wilde wrong?

Oscar Wilde:You can always judge a man by the quality of his enemies.

Think about it.  By that measure, Obama is a pathetic loser.

PS: It might not be Oscar Wilde, it might be Dr Who or Joseph Conrad or someone else.  That is the danger of relying on the Internet for quotes.  However, in "The Picture of Dorian Gray", Oscar Wilde does have this passage:
"I choose my friends for their good looks, my acquaintances for their good characters, and my enemies for their good intellects.  A man cannot be too careful in the choice of his enemies.  I have not got one who is a fool.  They are all men of some intellectual power, and consequently they all appreciate me."

Of course Wilde may have been less successful in picking his own enemies than his character was. From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Importance_of_Be...

"The successful opening night marked the climax of Wilde's career but also heralded his downfall. The Marquess of Queensberry, father of Lord Alfred Douglas, an intimate friend of Wilde, planned to present Wilde a bouquet of rotten vegetables and disrupt the show. Wilde was tipped off and Queensberry was refused admission. Soon afterwards, however, their feud came to a climax in court, where Wilde's homosexual double life was revealed to the Victorian public and he was eventually sentenced to imprisonment. Wilde's notoriety caused the play, despite its success, to be closed after just 86 performances. After his release, he published the play from exile in Paris, but he wrote no further comic or dramatic work."

True. One should choose enemies for their good intellect. They will provide good learning experience for us.
