LED lighting

An global warming & energy-conscious colleague gifted me and others a Philips EnduraLED light bulb each, and my initial impression is very positive.

3 years ago I had purchased all our CFL bulbs from this site. I see that while the energy drawn by the CFL and LED bulb is comparable, the latter contains no mercury.

The warranty is only 3 years (26,280 hjours of non-stop use), whereas the claimed 25,000 hour life would translate to 14+ years if used 5 hours a day, which is more realistic. This suggests either poor resistance to on-off cycles or lies by the manufacturer.

These devices have been designed and put together relatively recently. The lifetime has not been established by testing under normal conditions - there just hasn't been the time for these bulbs to live out their natural life.

My understanding is that accelerated testing is done, at elevated temperatures, and perhaps higher currents and voltages than normal. The 25K hours lifetime is an estimate based on such tests.

The manufacturer's warranty, as far as I know, is intended to take care of the infant mortality phase of the life cycle.
