Amazon.com with its limited peek-inside-the-book is probably the best a digital book store-front can be, but there is something else to the serendipity of finding unexpected gems in a bookstore. Of course, such bookstores are increasingly scarce. In my area, Borders used to have a really good store, which is gone. The Princeton University bookstore which had good potential for discovery was outsourced, and now the replacement holds mostly textbooks. During the time I've been here, the Rutgers University bookstore never impressed me. A friend of mine has some favorite haunts around Boston, perhaps one of the last good refuges of the physical book.
Exactly my thoughts.... Now that Internet has become the primary source of information, we just zero-in to the exact word, phrase or piece of info we want to find. While this may save time, we have lost the interesting journey we used to take earlier to reach the destination. In its simplest form, I rue the use of online dictionaries when trying to find the meaning of a word. Using paper dictionary led us through the long route of finding some other words on the way leading to more enrichment...
