A policeman, R Vetrivel, in Tamil Nadu lies on the road begging for help. The 44-year-old's legs have been chopped off by gangsters.
A government convoy passes by this part of Tirunelvelli. It includes two ministers - for Sports and Health - in the Tamil Nadu government. The convoy stops. Neither of the ministers step out of their cars. With them are bureaucrats - a Collector and a Health Secretary.
The Collector, M Jayaraman, finally gets out of his car after dithering for eight minutes. But nobody offers to take the wounded inspector to hospital. Finally, the Collector phones for an ambulance. It doesn't arrive.
Twenty minutes later, the cop is placed in one of the cars (the ministers still don't offer theirs). The policeman dies en route to the hospital.

ps: You will recall how during the 11/26 commando operation in Mumbai, the commandos arrived in rickety old bone-rattling BEST buses. Compare that with the luxury coaches cricketers are carted in.

RB, The convoy of ministers cars came there after 5 minutes of this incident. During the attack some country bomb and pipe bombs were thrown. The security people who accompanied the convoy in two cars adviced them not to come out as there were still unexploded bombs and they also thought that some gang people may be hiding in bush and can attack or throw the bombs again. In the mean time one car of security people went chasing the gang and even fired three rounds whereas the other car remained there for the security of ministers. From the vernacular press i heard that it took half an hour for the police to send him to hospital in a police jeep as the ambulance didn't turn up quickly. Yes ofcourse we cant give a clean cheat to them as it took thirty minutes for them to transfer him to a jeep and carry him to hospital.
