Lame Duck President

Obama made history today - becoming the first President to become a lame duck before one year of his presidency was over. In the blue, blue state of Massachusetts, a tea-bagger Republican won the Senate seat made vacant by Edward Kennedy's death. Given the craven, pussilanimous, spineless Democrats, this means the president's agenda is dead. Moreover, Obama will not be able to do the hard things necessary to turn the situation around. Chances are that he will be a one-term President.

What comes next? Maybe a tea-bagger Congress and a President Sarah Palin.

To an objective observer, it must be strange to see in this the demise of Democratic governance when they have 59/100 seats in the Senate. But the Democrats stand for nothing, and sway with each gust of wind. And so now, they are swept away.

So it's time for all good men to infiltrate the Republican party?

This reminds me of the end of republicanism in Rome. The established rich and powerful did not want to cede power to a new set of people and the masses were too poor/afraid to do anything about it. They were happy to give all power to Octavian and create an emperor. We'll probably see a number of Palinesque presidents before someone decides it's enough and creates a dictatorship.
Given the feckless conduct of the Democrats and President Obama over the past few months, I shed no tears after hearing tonight's result.
Obama will do nothing different. He will still chase the chimera of bipartisanship, he will still confabulate with his Wall St cronies, he will still wage war with his hawkish buddies. He is in love with his own voice and visage. Nothing else matters. He hears nothing and sees nothing. He has become like the Bourbons, forgets nothing and learns nothing. The US people have decided they would rather have a bubble economy, live off their credit cards and hock themselves into oblivion, while enjoying the Beer and the [Super] Bowl.
