The main threat to both middle-class family budgets and to the Federal budget is the ever-rising cost of health care. It seems that the main driver of health care costs is the soaring incidence of diabetes; and this is in turn linked to the increasing amount of sugar, white flour and such in the American diet. Diabetes presents a complication in the treatment of almost every other disease.
There is also a growing incidence of Alzheimer's disease, and while its cause is still a mystery, it may just may turn out to be type 3 diabetes, also exacerbated by an excess of sugar in the diet. That disease ruins a person's final years, and also costs a lot in care.
So, it would seem that America is eating itself into bankruptcy. It seems budget discipline does begin at the kitchen table, just in a way different than one might have thought.
