This was on the New Jersey side (Hoboken) of the Hudson, where Macy's held its annual fireworks show this year(normally on the East river). I travelled light, just the 24-105; should have carried the 70-200 (to get closer) and tripod for long exposure.
To get the classical exposures for fireworks with long light trails, something like ISO 100, f/9, 2 second exposure is needed. A bit of experimentation in the manual mode is needed.
I do like the instant frame look of the fireworks, too. This one is f/4, 0.1 second, ISO 200. In a larger size you can see the limits of image stabilization. here
